Program and Text by Phil Sampson (The Black Knight)
DARKWORLD II is a graphic role-playing adventure game in the 40-column
mode. It places you in a world of excitement and danger, where every step
can turn into a battle of wits and power with any number of otherworldly
creatures. In other words, it's like driving downtown after midnight.
You begin by creating your persona and choosing your characteristics,
or "attributes". Then you travel through a series of creature-infested
areas looking for the legendary Gem of the Wizard, hoping to exit from the
same place you began with your life and health intact. Along the way
you'll find coins, keys and potions that will help you -- and monsters that
will try to reduce you to dust. What could be more fun?
The Main Menu
-------------
From here you can create a character, load an existing character and
quit to BASIC (or LOADSTAR 128 if you have a LOADSTAR 128 disk in the
active drive). The first time you play you need to create a character
since there is none on the LS 128 disk.
Creating a character
--------------------
Your character has four attributes:
STRENGTH - how hard you hit your foe.
INTELLIGENCE - how smart you are, especially at identifying things.
DEXTERITY - how good you are at not missing when you try to hit.
LUCK - how fortunate you are, as well as initial hit points.
You'll be shown a random "roll" of numbers for each attribute, plus a
certain number of bonus points. You can roll again and again by answering
"n" to the prompt. When you get some numbers that satisfy you press "y"
then use the CRSR keys and "+" and "-" to convert the bonus points to
whichever attributes you wish. Press RETURN when done.
NOTE: You can save the character to a different active drive if you want
but since a character's data doesn't take up much disk space, it's best to
keep your character files on the same disk as the rest of the program.
Loading a character
-------------------
Type the name of the character you want to play and press RETURN. The
game loads your character from the current drive and places him/her in the
town.
Places in the game
------------------
TOWN - the town is where you start, and where you exit the game as well.
Leaving the town (upper left, where you entered) saves your character to
the drive it was loaded from.
RED BUILDING - the Armory. Things are expensive there but are of the best
quality.
PURPLE BUILDING - the Temple. For a fee they will heal you.
GREEN BUILDING - Storage. You can store up to 8 items there, for a fee,
of course.
DARKWORLD - located under the town. The pillars in the lower right corner
are the entrance.
Things to find
--------------
LANTERN - one of the most valuable items you can have, for it lets you see
in the Darkworld and find items more quickly.
COIN - coins are needed to pay your way for healing and storage.
POTION - there are three kinds of potions:
POTION OF POWER - increases your power to hit your foe. Lasts for five
minutes and is additive...the more you use, the harder you hit. It is not
usable during battle.
POTION OF HEALING - heals you to full power at any time.
POTION OF ESCAPE - takes you to level 1 when used. Not usable during
battle.
KEY - unlocks the doors you may find before you in the Darkworld.
Controls
--------
Movement is either by joystick (in Port #2) or CRSR keys.
ESC - tells you all about your character. While in this area, you can use
these keys:
E - equip an item.
U - use an item.
D - drop an item.
I - identify a potion. You must identify a potion before it can be
used.
Joystick
--------
UP - Up
DOWN - Down
RIGHT - Right
LEFT - Left
UP-LEFT - Fight
DOWN-LEFT - Run
DOWN-RIGHT - Use
Playing hints
-------------
When you first start, run across Level 1 until you find something,
then run back to town. Hit ESC and look to see what you found. Look for a
lantern first. Coins are also good. Running away from more than one
monster is a good idea at first. Make sure you have a coin to pay for your
healing though.
Killing monsters gives you a chance to take some of the things they
were using (if you are carrying less than 8 items!). Level 1 items can be
equipped on level 1 OR in town (where it's SAFE!). All other (and more
desirable) items found must be equipped on the level they were found ONLY.
Find a Lantern and use it. Look for potions and coins to start with.
Put things in storage in case you "die". You don't REALLY die. You just
have to start over...WITH the things you stored...but without anything you
found and didn't save yourself with!
After level 3 things get darker. You will meet different monsters the
deeper you go. There are 15 types in all. Dragons leave behind no armor.
Keep a potion of escape with you. Always carry a key and a potion of
power and use it every 4 1/2 minutes. You will keep getting more powerful
and never run out of time.
The more clever among you will figure out a way to cheat with the
storage, as well as reprogramming things to make it easier. Play it the
way it is written first and it will be more fun for you. Then if you must,
reprogram or cheat or whatever.
But above all, have PHUN!
FENDER'S POSTMUMBLE: Phil Sampson, aka The Black Knight, is known to the
readers of LOADSTAR 64 for his great character graphics. Several of his
pictures made of the standard Commodore graphics (those found on the keys
themselves) have been published on LS 64 and a couple of them have even
been used as title screens. Check out the monsters in this game and you'll
see what he can do.
I must admit that I've never played a game like this beyond the first
levels. My eyes glaze over and I think of all of the books in my library I
have left to read. So, if you get stuck, your best bet is to write
directly to Phil Sampson, 819 Blattman Road, Oak Harbor WA 98277 and ask
for help. Please send a stamped envelope.
